Section of Bernard Avenue now closed for setup of vehicle-free zone

The recent hot and sunny weather makes it feel like summer has arrived, but we still haven’t even hit the May long weekend.

That’s still a couple days and it often feels like a bit of a summer kick off, even more so here in Kelowna because it’s the start of the Meet Me on Bernard program.

While the 300 block of Bernard Avenue won’t shut down to vehicle traffic until the Canada Day long weekend, the program has officially begun with the 200 block of Bernard.

The 200 block is the section of Bernard between the Spirit of Sails statue and Water Street, and it will shut down to traffic today at 6 am to accommodate Meet Me on Bernard setup.

Crews will spend the next two days transforming the road before it opens up to pedestrians and cyclists on Friday afternoon, just in time for the long weekend.

While the section of Bernard east of Water won’t fully join in on the fun until the summer, the 300-500 blocks of Bernard will get extended patios beginning this weekend.

As a result, parking in those blocks is now limited on the south side of Bernard.

The second closure for Meet Me on Bernard, which is the 300 block, will begin on June 26, while the 400-500 blocks will remain open to vehicles all summer with the exception of special events.

The annual summer program continues to expand year after year, with this year’s biggest addition being the brand new Downtown Kelowna Night Market that begins later this month.
