Summer Johansen, an Events and Promotions student, wanted to create an equal opportunity for women to play football so she has organized the first ever touch football tournament for Kelowna. Women of all skill levels are encouraged to join the ‘Okanagan Sunflowers’ to have a day of fun and raise funds for the Okanagan Sun.
“We will teach you everything you need to know to succeed in the tournament,” said Johansen. “The event begins with splitting the women up into groups of seven; each group will be assigned one Okanagan Sun player who will teach them the fundamentals of football. After lunch, the women will join their team to compete for the winning title and many awards.”

The tournament is open to any women aged 15 and older and family members are encouraged to join in on the fun for a $5 entrance fee. The cost to enter the tournament is $25 until July 1st and groups can register teams of seven. The action will take place at the Apple Bowl Stadium on July 20th, 2014 and participants will have the opportunity to win prizes throughout the day.
To register for the event go online to Eventbrite, check out the group Facebook page, or follow them on Twitter.
