Hi-Story! Celebrating Indigenous Voices
To record history is to spin a story, often with unreliable narrators and plot holes. Indigenous history is often presented through a settler perspective, with no Indigenous voices involved. This event introduces the practice of recording Indigenous history through both traditional Syilx/Indigenous oral storytelling practices and contemporary Syilx/Indigenous literature. This Indigenous History Month, listen to authors Nicola Campbell (Nłeʔkepmx, Syilx and Métis) and Levi Bent/qʷyqʷaʕyáx̌n,(Syilx) speak to the importance of their Indigenous stories—both past and present. Light refreshments will be served.
