Or – how about this – ever pictured yourself generating, or collecting, your own power and water? Scary?   Not necessarily – it just means living OFF THE GRID. Living “off the grid” means living independently, without relying on utility companies to provide electricity, natural gas, water or sewer. In fact, people have been choosing to live off the grid ever since it has existed, and they do it for a variety of reasons. Some want to be more in touch with nature, or free of utility payments to companies. Others like the idea of reducing their impact on the environment, or removing themselves from an urban-based society. These are just a few of the most common motives. What’s more, it’s gaining in popularity again, due in part to a strong homesteading movement and a return to its accompanying values, as a reaction to today’s environmental concerns.  “What’s old is new again?”  You bet. Visit the Okanagan Heritage Museum, starting October 17th, and see what life Off the Grid is all about. Explore the who, the how and the motivation behind the lifestyle. Find tips on how you can reduce your energy consumption, and get your hands (and feet!) on some of our newest interactive props!
