More Canadians are Wining and Dining

Canadians are thirsty and eager to go out and dine, according to a new survey released by Statistics Canada. Sales at food services and drinking places increased point eight per cent to $4.9 billion in December. In addition, prices for food purchased from restaurants went up two point five per cent in the 12 months leading up to December.

In December, three of the four sectors reported higher sales. The full-service restaurant industry accounted for a significant portion of the gain at a one point five per cent increase, and drinking establishments saw an increase of one point one per cent.

Although eateries and local watering holes have seen an increase, food sectors such as service contractors, caterers, and mobile food services, experienced a one point two per cent decline over the last few months.
