In Focus | Tasha Carmichael of Kelowna Kids Physiotherapy

In Focus is our gift to the community. A way for us to help show our recognition for the people, businesses and organizations that help make our city great. The team at KelownaNow.com is passionate about this community and the people that make it amazing. We want to show our friends, neighbours, family and colleagues that we notice them and the fabulous things that they do.

What is your name?
Tasha Carmichael

What do you always find yourself saying?
‘Awesome’ and ‘go, go, go’

If you could spend one whole day with anyone in the world who is currently alive, who would you select and why?
Santa Claus. Kids love him, I’ve never been to the North Pole and I’m sure he’d give me a ride in his sleigh.

If you were to receive any existing public award, what award would you like to win?
I’m not very familiar or focused on public awards. Seeing children accomplish things that didn’t seem possible is what motivates me, and maybe some chocolate cake.

If you could spend a day with any historical figure, who would you choose and why?
Terry Fox - He’s inspirational, selfless, a dreamer… and we’d probably go for a run.

Who inspires you?
The children and families that I work with.

What are three things on your bucket list?
Travel to the Patagonia.
Go heli-skiing.
To learn how to play guitar well enough that I can play at the campfire when we go camping. Those people seem so cool.

If you had an enormous yacht, what would you name it?
Physio-Eau

If you could foresee a single day of your future in its entirety, what date would you select?
It’s so hard to pick one day. I’d love to see what my kids decide to do for their careers, who they decide to love and meet my grandchildren.

What are you passionate about?
Helping kids to be active and healthy. Fresh air. Delicious food.

What has been your favourite day of your life, up to this point?
Any day that I’m active and outside with my family - skiing at Big White, hiking at Knox mountain, riding our bikes along Abbott St., camping at Bear Creek, canoeing on the lake, the list goes on and on.

What has been your proudest accomplishment?
Being a mom to two little munchkins.

Where is your favourite place to dine in Kelowna? What do you like about it?
RauDZ - it’s so delicious!

What is your favourite activity or event in Kelowna? Why?
Swimming in the lake, of course (I even go for a quick dip at lunch in the summer).

What is the name of your business/organization?
Kelowna Kids Physiotherapy

Where can people find you or your business online?
www.kelownakidsphysio.com

How do people connect with you on Linkedin?
I think you can just search my name, Tasha Carmichael.

What does your business/organization do?
Provide high quality ‘kid-specific’ Physiotherapy services to maximize each child’s potential. Therapy services include assessment, consultation, treatment and custom home therapy programs designed for each child and their family. I generally see children in their own homes as I find they are most comfortable and I can provide more targeted and specific exercises for their home environment. I primarily focus on children from birth to 12 years of age with a wide range of concerns including:

- Baby flat head (Plagiocephaly)
- Torticollis
- Gait concerns - in/out-toeing, tiptoe walking
- Delayed walking or other gross motor skills
- Decreased coordination
As well as specific diagnoses including Cerebral Palsy, Down Syndrome, Neuromuscular disorders/syndromes, Traumatic brain injury, Autism Spectrum Disorder and Developmental Delay

What is your mission?
Play, independence and participation. I use the power of play to help children and their families achieve their goals.

If you could achieve one thing within your field, what would it be?
To inspire and enable children of all abilities to be physically active throughout their lives.

Where do you want your business/organization to be in five years?
To be honest, I’m not sure where I’m headed. I started this business in response to requests from families for physiotherapy services. I’m a mom with two young children and a husband who travels a lot for work so I’m just trying to balance work and home life. In a few years, I can see growing and expanding my business to partner with other health professionals and possibly provide a clinic location to be able to provide more services. But right now, I’m just trying to get through each crazy week.

Who do you consider to be a forerunner within your field?
Laura Patrick of Kids Physio in Vancouver

What three qualities do you feel that your business/organization exemplifies?
Family-centred. Play. Independence.

What would you like to say to your employees/volunteers?
To the families I work with, I want to say thank you. You’re children’s determination, energy and joy is what inspires me every day.

How does your business/organization impact the community?
I provide kid-specific physiotherapy services to enable children to be more active and participate more fully in their community. For example, riding an adapted bike to and from school, hiking with their family, or swimming with friends.

If you were trapped in an elevator with several wealthy investors from any field, which field would you want them to be experts in? What would say to them/talk about?
Education. The benefits of physical activity on learning are well documented and supported by research. Children spend too much of their school day sitting. We need to provide opportunities for children to be physically active throughout their school day to enhance and maximize their learning. This includes increasing recess and physical education time, as well as, re-structuring the physical space of classrooms so that children are not sitting at desks for most of their day, but they are standing, walking, running and jumping while putting into practice what they are learning.

If I could change one thing about Kelowna, it would be:
More separated bike lanes so that families can more safely bike around town.

What do you think makes Kelowna great?
The physical surroundings - lake, mountains, beach and balanced urban/rural lifestyle.

My choice for the Kelowna In Focus spotlight is:
Natasha Wood - Stomp Creative Movement and Dance

Some general comments I would like to share are:
I’ve been overwhelmed by the response to my business so far. I had only planned on seeing a couple of kids once or twice a week. The response from families looking for kid-specific physiotherapy services for their children has been incredible and I just want to say THANKS!
