An opera about bullying will open in Vancouver and it was written by a local artist known for his spoken word.

Penticton’s Shane Koyczan along with music composer Neil Weisensel have created the autobiographical story that focuses on a youth’s struggles against the harmful impacts of bullying. Stickboy is produced by the Vancouver Opera and will open Thursday, October 23rd and run until November 7th, 2014.

"The excitement that we at Vancouver Opera are feeling on the day of the world premiere of a new opera is almost beyond expressing,” said Vancouver Opera General Director James W. Wright. “Through the brave eloquence of Shane Koyczan's words and the beautiful power of Neil Weisensel's music, we present to the world and to our community a work that we know will make a lasting contribution to the discussion of how we treat those among us who are different, and how we live together in community."

The 12 shows were made possible by a $500,000 grant by the Government of BC provided to the Vancouver Opera.
