A petition is circulating asking for BC Premier and West Kelowna MLA Christy Clark to resign from her position.
The petition was started by Fort St John’s Shelley Ouellette at the beginning of August and so far more than 1,000 have signed in support. Ouellette says the premier needs to step down in light of the recent disaster at the Mount Polley Mine near Likely, BC.
“The gov't not only knew this industrial disaster could happen, they also knew that it would happen if certain measures were not addressed immediately. The only preventative measures they took were to write letters to the mining company. With the knowledge that this disaster was a real possibility, the mine should have been shut down and this disaster would have been thwarted. I would ask the people of British Columbia to stand up against this government’s abuse of our precious natural waterways. Call for the Premier to step down,” said Ouellette.
People from all over Canada have signed the petition including residents in Kelowna, West Kelowna, Edmonton, Barriere and more. This isn’t the first time BC residents have called for the resignation of the premier. In 2013 residents asked her to step down after a plan leaked with information about how to attract ethnic voters.
