UPS to Expand in Kelowna Ahead of the Holiday Season

There are 126 days until Christmas 2014 but delivery company UPS is already making preparations for an onslaught of parcels expected to flood in over the holiday season.

On Wednesday UPS announced a multi-million dollar investment to expand its operations in British Columbia with three new centres to open in Kamloops, Nanaimo and Comox. As well the current centre in Kelowna will be expanded to handle the influx of mail. Beginning on Wednesday pickup and delivery service began in Kamloops, according to UPS.

"Expanding our service in BC and across Canada is fueled by market opportunity and customer demand," said UPS Canada President Michael Tierney. "UPS continues to invest in new capabilities and network capacity to secure customers' confidence and enable their long-term growth."

It is estimated that the expansion will create about 80 new jobs with the completion date of new centres by November 2014. Last Christmas the company was under fire in the United States over delays in deliveries as thousands of Americans did not receive their parcels in time for the big day.

While the problems were not as wide spread in Canada the company is looking to avoid another overwhelming, and disastrous holiday delivery season.

According to Nirali Raval, Public Relations, "UPS Canada will be expanding its distribution centre located at 8826 Jim Bailey Crescent." Of the 80 jobs to be created with the overall expansion about 10 per cent of those will be positioned in Kelowna.
