The CEO of Apple has come out publicly about his sexual orientation in an opinion piece for Bloomberg Businessweek and the article has been applauded around the world.
Tim Cook says “I’m proud to be gay” in the deep and heartfelt article published on Thursday.
“Throughout my professional life, I’ve tried to maintain a basic level of privacy. I come from humble roots, and I don’t seek to draw attention to myself,” states Cook. “Apple is already one of the most closely watched companies in the world, and I like keeping the focus on our products and the incredible things our customers achieve with them.”
Cook says he has never denied his sexuality but never publicly acknowledged it either, until now. “So let me be clear: I’m proud to be gay, and I consider being gay among the greatest gifts God has given me,” explains Cook.
Cook decided to go public about his sexual orientation with the hopes of helping others struggling to come to terms with who he or she is. He doesn’t consider himself an activist but understands the struggle to feel alone and confused and wants others to know there are people out there who have overcome the barriers around sexual orientation and become successful as a result.
“For years, I’ve been open with many people about my sexual orientation,” adds Cook. “Plenty of colleagues at Apple know I’m gay, and it doesn’t seem to make a difference in the way they treat me. Of course, I’ve had the good fortune to work at a company that loves creativity and innovation and knows it can only flourish when you embrace people’s differences. Not everyone is so lucky.”
Social media has exploded about the article as Cook is the first, most prominent businessman to be openly gay in America.
