Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson, "Worst Mass Murder in Calgary's History"

The suspect involved in the quintuple homicide in Northwest Calgary has been confirmed as a male in his early twenties, who is not only the son of a 33-year veteran inspector of the police force, but is also a student at the University of Calgary, according to Calgary Police Chief Rick Hanson.

“The scene was horrific,” Hanson recalled, “to go to a scene where students were murdered…it’s very difficult.”

The Calgary Police Service received a call at 1:20am reporting a stabbing in progress at 11 Butler Crescent in Northwest Calgary. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found three male victims inside the house dead and one female victim in critical condition. The fifth victim, a young male was found in critical condition on the front lawn. The two survivors were rushed to hospital, but later died from their injuries.

Chief Hanson joined the Calgary Police Service in 1975 and solemnly admitted, “This is the worst mass murder in Calgary’s history.”

Police say that the students were throwing a party to celebrate the end of the school year. There were approximately 20 students at the house when the suspect arrived, shortly after, he began targeting the victims one by one, inflicting multiple stab wounds on each of his targets.

The victims are 2 males, 23 years of age both from Calgary, one male 22 years of age from Priddis, Alta.; one 27-year old male from Calgary, and one 23 year old female, also from Calgary. The names of the deceased have yet to be released, pending next of kin notification.

The release of the suspect’s name is anticipated to occur later Tuesday afternoon, once charges have been laid. At this point, the police are seeking a first degree murder charge to be handed out to the perpetrator, whose motive for stabbing the five students is not yet known.

According to investigators, the suspect arrived at the party after working at a local grocery store, already carrying a weapon, which they believe he brought from his place of employment. The weapon used in the stabbings themselves however, was obtained from inside the house. There does not appear to have been an instigating incident that happened at the party, nor earlier in the day that may have precipitated the violent event.

Once the victims had been attacked, the perpetrator fled eastbound on Brentwood Boulevard, according to a witness who was waiting at the scene for police, and was able to give a detailed account, not only of what had happened, but of where the suspect was last seen. The K-9 units were dispatched at that point, and the 23-year old male was subdued after a struggle with police and was apprehended not far from the scene, near Charleswood Drive.

None of the students, nor the suspect himself have ever had any negative involvement with the police prior to Tuesday morning's tragic incident.
