The Mayor of La Prairie, Quebec has passed away after being stung several times by wasps while at her cottage.
On Sunday, July 20th Lucie F. Roussel passed away at the age of 51 at the Hospital of Thetford-Mines. Roussel was at her cottage in Stratford when she accidentally stepped on the wasps’ nest while out walking.
Reportedly she had no known allergy to wasp stings. In a release issued on Monday municipal officials said they were shocked and saddened by her death.
“The town has lowered its flags to half-mast,” the release said. “Our thoughts are with her family and the citizens of La Prairie.”
Roussel began her career as a municipal councillor in 1999 and had been mayor of the South Shore town outside of Montreal since 2005. She leaves behind a daughter, 18, and a son, 19.
