Trudeau's Liberals Move Past Harper's Tories in Latest Poll

Ipsos Reid has released a new poll that shows the Harper Tories have fallen behind Trudeau and the Liberals.

The new survey shows that the Conservatives hold 31 per cent of the popular vote while the Liberals inch ahead with 38 per cent of the vote, followed far behind with the NDP and Tomas Mulcair at 24 per cent. The results were posted to the Ipsos Reid website on Monday and shows that Liberal support is up five points since April. The Tories are down two points and the NDP sits unchanged. A whooping 15 per cent still don’t know who they will vote for once the election takes place in 2015.

“The Tories have had a difficult year trying to gain traction with voters, while at same time the Liberals – who have their sights set on a majority government in the next election – are continuing an upward trajectory that began two years ago, despite the odd blunder or misstep from the rookie-leader Trudeau,” said CEO Barrell Bricker.

One thing half of Canadians can agree on is that the government must provide key social programs, even if that means increasing taxes. A full 50 believe this with 13 per cent strongly agreeing and 36 per cent agreeing somewhat.

Canadians appear to be warming to the idea of taxing to maintain or enhance social programs, which is in contrast to the Conservative mantra of cutting taxes and limiting spending. This could at least partly explain some of the shift in support away from the Tories and towards the Liberals over the past two years.
