Prime Minister Harper Addresses the Nation in Light of Ottawa Shootings

Prime Minister Stephen Harper addressed the nation on Wednesday evening in regards to the shootings that took place on Parliament Hill earlier that day. The events that took place on Wednesday morning in Ottawa has certainly influenced Canadians to re-think the commonly held perception that Canada is an exception when it comes to violence and strong political ideologies.

“This week's events are a grim reminder that Canada is not immune to the types of terrorist attacks we have seen elsewhere around the world,” said Harper.

The Prime Minister voiced his condolences for the family of the fallen solider, Corporal Nathan Cirillo, and reiterated the need to strengthen national security agencies in light of today's events.

Described as 'brutal and violent,' Harper made it clear that Canadians will not be harassed. “We will not be intimidated. Canada will never be intimidated...We will remain vigilant.”

The full investigation on this case is still on going, although the PM did state that “those responsible will have no safe haven.”

“Tonight, we also pray for the speedy recovery of the others injured in these despicable attacks,” stated Harper.

Official leader of the Opposition, Thomas Mulcair, also addressed the nation stating that the “peace of our nation's capital was shattered. Canada was shaken today but we will not waiver.”

Mulcair went on to explain that the actions that took place on Parliament Hill are designed to provoke Canadians to express hatred, yet as Canadians, we will not succumb to that level of hatred: “we will persevere,” stated Mulcair. “Today's events have instead only succeeded in drawing us closer and making us stronger.”

Both the Prime Minister and the NDP leader gave their thanks to all of the law enforcement agencies who help to maintain democracy in Canada.
