Alberta Health Services says is has a patient in its care with an unknown illness and she is being tested for several illnesses including Ebola, but it’s unlikely she has the virus.
According to Medical Officer of Health for the Calgary Zone Dr. Richard Musto, the woman in her 30s started showing symptoms of a contagious illness on Wednesday night. She was initially admitted to the Peter Lougheed Centre in Calgary, but later moved to the South Health Campus.
“The risk of this patient having Ebola is very low, testing is being done out an abundance of precaution,” said Dr. Musto. “We understand that this may make Albertans feel anxious, but be assured we are prepared to manage any potential case of Ebola. This case is an example of our preparedness.”
The Alberta Health Services is not releasing what symptoms the woman is facing but do confirm that she is not a risk to the public at this time. Musto adds that they will be following up with any patient who was in the emergency department at the time the woman was there as a precaution.
The South Health Campus is one of four hospitals in Alberta that is equipped to handle Ebola patients and the patient was transferred there as a precaution.
