Man to Live on a Melting Iceberg to Highlight Climate Change

A man plans to live on an iceberg for an entire year with the hopes of bringing attention to the need for climate change action.

Alex Bellini is an Italian athlete who is known for his running and rowing, but this time it will be his patience that will be tested instead of his stamina. Bellini plans to document his 12 month experience on the iceberg, which is located off the coast of Greenland. He has named his project “Adrift 2015” and it will begin in the spring of 2015.

Bellimi plans to live in a Kevlar reinforced survival capsule similar to those used in outer space. It will be insulated and will have more than 660 pounds of dry food which will keep him alive for the entire year. Once the iceberg fully melts, if it does, the capsule will be released into the ocean and will stay adrift until Bellini is rescued.

While most of the experience will be one in solitude, Bellini will invite journalists and researchers to join him so they can inform others of his journey. Bellini hopes the project will inspire people to take action about climate change, and the personal responsibility each person holds in reversing the damage already done.
