It all started on a United Airlines flight because one passenger was using the “Knee Defender” to prevent the person in front of him from reclining her seat. The gadget, which retails for $21.95, attaches to a passenger’s tray table and prevents the person in front from reclining. The dispute between the two passengers got so heated that the airline decided to divert the plane to Chicago, according to the Transportation Security Administration.

The man was said to be seated in a middle seat and used the Knee Defender to stop the woman in front of him from reclining while he was on his laptop. A flight attendant asked the man to remove the device but he refused. The woman, who was very upset, ended up throwing a cup of water at him, and that’s when the plane was diverted.

Both passengers were said to be sitting in the Economy Plus section of the plane, and according to United’s website that part of the plane has four more inches of legroom than in coach.
