BC Wildlife Rescue Centre Treats Oil Covered Birds

The Wildlife Rescue Association in Burnaby received 10 seagulls on Monday that were covered in fish oil after they got into an uncovered container at a fish processing plant.

The rescue centre has been working tirelessly to clean the birds up from their oil spill baths but is running low on supplies. The only thing that can clean them is Dawn Ultra Original Scent dish soap, and only the American version of the product.

It’s unclear as to why the soap produced in the United States works better than the Canadian version, but it is what the association has discovered over time.

The 10 gulls are using quite a bit of the rescue’s stock pile of the dish soap so the call for help has gone out. Anyone who is travelling to the United States and is willing to pick up a few bottles of the stuff is asked to donate it.

The rescue association was established in 1979 and currently runs a wildlife hospital known as the Care Centre. They treat animals from across the lower mainland and the rest of BC as needed, with 80 per cent of funding coming through donations.
