You'll Soon Be Able to Charge Your Phone with IKEA Furniture

IKEA is trying to put an end to tangled cords with furniture that can actually wirelessly charge your phone.

The global home furnishings retailer made the announcement on Sunday that they were launching bedside tables, lamps, and desks with were Qi-powered, meaning that they'd have areas able to wirelessly charge mobile devices. Qi, according to the announcement, is the leading global wireless charging standard from Wireless Power Consortium (WPC) and makes wireless charging pads and other products.

"IKEA is delivering on its vision of making life at home better with this innovative, stylish and useful new collection that show consumers the beauty and simplicity of wireless charging," said Menno Treffers, WPC chairman. "We applaud IKEA for its unmatched insight and their unique passion for making wireless charging affordable and simple for consumers."

Qi is currently available around the world in hotels, restaurants, airports, and some public locations. These wireless chargers are meant to be open and universal, working with any Qi device. It claims to be backwards compatible, meaning you won't need keep needing to buy new products, as well as energy efficient. Apparently there are now more than 80 Qi-enabled smartphones, with Samsung announcing Sunday that they had Qi charging built into the new Galaxy S6 and Galaxy S6 edge smartphones.

"Our belief is that mobile phones are vital parts to people's lives at home and their desire to stay connected, and Qi addresses an unmet need to keep devices powered," said Bjorn Block, Range Manager for Lighting and Wireless Charging, at IKEA.

These wireless charging home furnishings will be available in April in North America and Europe.
