More Canadians Turning to Self-Tanner for Summertime Glow

Canadians are ditching the harmful rays of tanning beds and moving toward self-tanning products to produce that sun-kissed glow.

According to a study released by the NPD Group, the use of self-tanning products has witnessed an eight per cent increase in 2014. Canadians are quick to grab self-tanning products, but other sun-care essentials, such as sun-screen and after-sun products, are not faring as well.

This recent increase in self-tanning products has resulted in a nearly $1.5 million gain, which brings such products almost on par with traditional in-sun products.

“It’s clear that the popularity of self-tanning products is affecting consumer purchasing when it comes to other sun care products,” said Sandy Silva, Canadian Beauty Industry Analyst at The NPD Group. “Furthermore, it appears that since consumers are achieving that natural glow artificially, they feel less inclined to spend on in-sun and after-sun products.”

According to the NPD Group, the decrease in use for after-sun products and sunblock might be correlated to an increase in Canadians avoiding the sun, and this avoidance may be due to greater awareness around the risk of sun exposure. However, the study points out that sun-care products are still essential even when your time spent in the sun is reduced.

“Even if people are using self-tanners, that does not mean that they are completely avoiding the sun,” said Silva. “It’s important to remind consumers that just because they’re decreasing their sun exposure, they still need to invest in other sun care products to ensure they remain safe from harmful UV rays.”
