South Okanagan Jail on Schedule and Hiring has Begun

Construction of $192 million new Okanagan Correctional Centre (OCC) near Osoyoos is on schedule and hiring has already begun.

The new jail will be built in partnership with B.C. Corrections and the Osoyoos Indian Band, the first such partnership in British Columbia.

The 14.5 hectare site in the Senkulmen Business Park will feature 378 cells increasing the province’s capacity. Local workers are being hired to begin construction at the site of the state of the art facility.

The government estimates that major construction will begin in August with the completion anticipated for fall 2016.

The OCC will generate approximately 1,000 direct and indirect jobs during construction and following completion 240 full time correctional positions will be available.

Workers are already removing the top layer of earth from the construction site, putting up fences and ensuring environmental protection. Blueprints of the building are in the final stages of design.
