Hundreds of people participated in the 34th annual Terry Fox Run at the Mission Sports Fields on Sunday.

Young and old came down to help fight cancer by walking, running or biking one of three different distances. One participant, Gurdy Johnson, was 100 years old and ready to walk the race to help fight cancer. The crowd also included a large number of people that were part of “Terry's Team”, which recognizes cancer survivors.

Terry Fox began his run 34 years ago on April 12, 1980 in St. John's Newfoundland. After 143 days and 5,373 km, the young man who had survived bone cancer and had his right leg amputated was forced to stop outside of Thunder Bay, Ontario. Cancer had appeared in his lungs, and Terry Fox died on June 28, 1981 at 22 years old.

This event happens annually in Kelowna with a $0 budget. It's completely run by volunteers and donations, and the Terry Fox Foundation is reputed to be one of the most fiscally responsible charities in Canada. As always, there is no minimum donation. According to Terry Fox, “If you've given a dollar, you're part of the Marathon of Hope.” The Terry Fox Foundation funds research projects for numerous different types of cancer.

Over $650 million has been raised in Terry Fox's name for cancer research since he began his Marathon of Hope.

The Kelowna event this year had 1,400 participants assisted by 125 volunteers, and it raised $103,600. "We are absolutely thrilled with the turn-out and support for our community," said coordnator Lisa Worman.
