Lake Country Food Bank Needs More Votes For New Building

The Lake Country Food Bank's looking to build a new home, and you can help.

The food bank is in the running for the Aviva Community Fund, an annual competition that gives $1,000,000 to various projects. The Lake Country Food Bank has the opportunity to win up to $100,000 towards a new facility.

The current facility has very little storage and warehouse space, along with almost no refrigerated storage. Their space is shared in the basement of the old Winfield Elementary School and the school has just been put up for sale. Since their clients keep growing in numbers, the organization needs a better home to accommodate them.

The construction project is estimated to cost $1,065,000. “Much of this has already been raised though community fundraising,” states the food bank’s Aviva page. “The municipality has donated land, valued at $262,000, with lease fees and taxes waived.”

The Lake Country Food Bank needs to one of the top 15 projects out of nearly 500 to advance to the next round of the
Aviva Fund. And that's where you come in. The more you vote for the project on the Aviva Community Fund website, the higher it moves in the standings. As of last count they were in 14th place, but they need to keep up the pace to make sure they qualify when the first round ends on October 4. Every vote counts, and you can vote every day. Financial donations are also gratefully accepted.

The Lake Country Food Bank serves over 600 families every month out of the small, shared space.
