FourChange is Back...But with a New Name

There is a resurgence from the 2011 municipal election as FourChange is back, with a new name, but the same message.

In 2011 FourChange was formed by a group of Kelowna citizens in an effort to back who they wanted to see win the local election. Now ForKelowna will try to do the same thing and rely on two key mandates to do so.

“Firstly, in the last three years we have seen a dramatic improvement in the confidence in business in Kelowna and in the operation in City Hall,” said the group. “For that reason, we endorse the continuity of this council and support the re-election bid of all five incumbents. Considering that even if all five are re-elected, there will be four new individuals at the council table and this alone will bring changes. We believe all five incumbents are needed in order to provide continuity and a strong base to the incoming council. Secondly, with 31 candidates running for councillor positions, we believe we can once again play a valuable role by going through a process of due diligence to vet the long list of candidates and respectfully make suggestions for four new councillors.”

The non-profit group says it will “provide voter direction” for residents and “keep our city moving.” In 2011 the now defunct group FourChange managed to raise more than $30,000 to have four incumbent councillors ousted and new faces on city council. The group targeted Charlie Hodge, Michele Rule, Angela Reid Nagy and Kevin Craig. Only three of the four chosen candidates were elected, Gerry Zimmerman, Gail Given and Colin Basran. The fourth candidate, Carol Gran, was unsuccessful in securing a council seat.

The steering committee consists of Brad Cronquist, Rodney Friesen, Cal McCarthy, Jorin Wolf, Barry Lapointe, Darryl Doerkson.
