In direct reference to Prime Minister Stephen Harper's address to the nation on Wednesday evening, security measures across the country will surely be heightened as a result of the shootings that took place on Parliament Hill and Kelowna, it turns out, is no exception.
The Kelowna International Airport (YLW), in taking note of Harper's advice, has implemented a few additional security measures.
“The general public will notice heightened security at all modes of transportation across the country,” said Kelowna Airport Communications Coordinator, Jenelle Hynes.
Hynes mentioned that additional security measures refers to increased numbers of security patrol and RCMP presence. The current security scanning process used in airports will remain the same.
“It really is going to be seamless and it's business as usual here at YLW. The public might notice more patrol cars here and they might see extra RCMP walking through the terminal, where normally it wouldn't be as visual,” said Hynes in explaining how security measures would be heightened at the airport.
RCMP and additional security presence is expected to appear throughout public spaces in B.C. and Hynes emphasized that such measures are for “customer comfort and putting people at ease.”
“We've always had security at the airport but were just making it a little more public and a little more out in the open,” added Hynes.
