Kelowna Farmers' Market Still Bustling on Last Outdoor Saturday

It was a chilly day for the last outdoor Saturday of the Kelowna Farmers' and Crafters' Market, but the weather didn't seem to cool down the enthusiasm.

Despite the colder weather and the end of the season, booths were still full of goods and many people were milling about. The market had everything from your expected fruits and vegetables to sizzling sausages, jams and jellies, baking, jewellery, wooden bowls, and decorative flowers.

Vendors were animated and friendly, telling customers how big mushrooms can grow and recommending potatoes from another booth across the way. Bundled up and armed with reusable bags, the buyers were filling up their arms with hot treats and radishes, possibly even some last few strawberries.

This market began in 1995, and it's going strong with 160 vendors on the average day, making it B.C.'s largest farmer's and crafters' market. The organizers also hold events such as the Pumpkin Festival with free pumpkin decorating and kids' days with entertainment.

Recently, the Kelowna City Council approved a rezoning application allowing liquor sales at the market by Orchard Park Mall. Though these sales won't start until next outdoor season, it's something to look forward to for next year. The Penticton Farmers Market has been selling alcohol for almost the entire outdoor season.

If you missed the market on Saturday, don't worry! There's one more Wednesday morning outside, and then the market will begin its indoor winter season at the Parkinson Recreation Centre.
