Councillor Blanleil Makes His Choice for Mayoral Candidate

An official endorsement has been made in the 2014 civic electoral race for Mayor. Outgoing City Councillor, Andre Blanleil, has put his support behind Colin Basran's bid for Mayor. The two served together on Council for the past three years.

“Colin Basran is the best candidate for Mayor to continue the momentum built during this last term as a Council,” said Blanleil. Council has worked well as a team these past three years and under Colin's leadership Kelowna will continue in a positive direction.”

“Earning the support of your peers is a great compliment,” said Basran in response to the endorsement. “I am honoured that Andre believes in me and my ability to lead Kelowna into the future.”

Always willing to speak his mind, Blanleil has been a popular Council member since the beginning of his 21 year term in office. He announced in September that he would not seek re-election for the upcoming term.

Since 1993, Blanleil has served on seven councils and admits that the most current council term has been among the most productive.

The City of Kelowna Council has accomplished a number of projects during this term including, the revitalization of Bernard Avenue and the downtown waterfront, the proper preparation of a new RCMP station; the approval of a downtown hotel on Queensway, and the progression of both the Innovation Centre and Interior Health's new major office complex in downtown Kelowna. Basran is proud of these accomplishments and has high hopes for the future of Kelowna.

“I’d like to thank Andre for his 21 years of dedication to our community,” commented Basran. “Serving with him this term on a Council that has helped get Kelowna moving forward has been very rewarding.”

Blanleil also commented on Basran’s willingness to connect with others and his willingness to listen to the needs of the community and City staff.

“Colin has great respect for staff, and together with the re-elected incumbents as well as some newcomers to Council, it will be a great team to keep Kelowna moving forward,” added Blanleil.

On Monday, Blanleil also publicly endorsed Brad Sieben to serve as Councillor for the up-coming term.
