The 2014 Christmas Kettle campaign has officially kicked off in Kelowna as the Salvation Army raises funds for those in need.

Volunteers will man the kettles in 19 different locations around the Central Okanagan from November 29th until December 24th, 2014. Hundreds of volunteers are needed to cover the 2,500 two hour shifts.

“We do still need significant hours to be filled especially in the next couple of weeks,” said Lead Pastor and Executive Director Darryl Burry. “November is one of those months where people are not quite yet in the Christmas spirit and as a result our volunteerism is a little bit slower to begin with.”

Last Christmas the Salvation Army helped support over 1,600 people with food hampers and gave toy hampers to more than 900 children in the Central Okanagan. Organizers are looking for two hour commitments from volunteers and signing up to participate is easy, says Burry.

“If you can give us two hours to stand at a kettle at any of our 19 locations that would be an absolute blessing to us,” adds Burry. “Most people after they have completed their first two hour shift like to come back and do more. It’s a wonderful opportunity to give back to the community.”
