Thefts From Vehicles on the Rise in Kelowna

The Kelowna RCMP has released the bi-weekly crime stats for the city and it shows an increase in theft from vehicles.

Over the past two weeks at least 72 cars were broken into, well above the average of 27 to 38 usually seen by police. So far this year Kelowna residents have reported a total of 1,663 cars broken into, that’s about four per cent more than at the same time last year.

The number of theft of vehicles has also increased as 18 were stolen from residents in the past two weeks. There is a 20 per cent increase in thefts of vehicles over 2013 with 436 reported stolen.

The number of break and enters into homes is also on the rise in Kelowna, police report that 23 homes were broken into over the past two weeks. On average eight to 16 homes are broken into in the city over a two week period, but so far in 2014 that number is higher than usual.
