Food Bank Needs Your Help to Stay in Business

The concern for hundreds of citizens throughout Lake Country who depend on the food bank is on the rise as the current home for the food bank could be sold at any time.

The food bank currently operates out of two small rooms—less than 800 square feet of space—in the basement of the former Winefield Elementary School. School District 23 has put the building and grounds up for sale, and at any time, the food bank could find itself without a home.

The food bank is in desperate need of a new, permanent home.

Over the past three years, members of the Rotary Club have investigated every possible location that the food bank could move to—residential housing, office buildings, rental space—although unfortunately, all prospects have reached a dead end.

The food bank suggests that the only long term solution would be to build a new building, designed specifically for an efficient food bank operation.

The District of Lake Country has made land available for this project. Residents have donated close to $150,000, and local businesses have committed around $250,000 worth of goods and services.

Despite their efforts, the food bank is still about $150,000 short of funds needed to start construction.

The food bank has applied for a $100,000 grant from the Aviva Fund. However, your votes are required in order for the application to go through.

Voting is easy. Starting December 1st, go to the voting website. Register, then cast your vote everyday until the polls close.
