Local Kelowna Philanthropist was recently honoured with a Giving Hearts Award at the 17th annual National Philanthropy Day Luncheon in Vancouver. In the spirit of the event's motto—change the world with a giving heart—Laurel D'Andrea, was recognized for being an outstanding volunteer fundraiser for various causes that are near and dear to her.
The Arthritis Society nominated D'Andrea for her incredible dedication to the cause. Not only did she play a significant role in garnering awareness and much needed funds for those living with arthritis, but D'Andrea also shared her own personal journey with arthritis, helping to inspire others to join the fight.
In the Central Okanagan specifically, D'Andrea is well known for her devotion to the Arthritis Society and most recently became Committee Chair for the Walk to Fight Arthritis. Under her leadership, the walk grew from 100 participants to over 300, and in addition, the event revenue has climbed from a net earning of $20,000 to over $45,000.
Those who are close to D'Andrea know her to be a warm, passionate, funny, and dedicated. Her son Dallas was able to join her at the awards ceremony.
“To be in a room that was filled with so many individuals that are giving of their time, talent, and energy was inspirational. Dallas and I were taken aback by all that was shared by each recipient, and the keynote speaker, Craig Kielburger encouraged and challenged each of us to keep doing what we love to do...give back,” commented D'Andrea.
