Okanagan Students Attend Summit in Vancouver

The Premier welcomed 122 students from around the province at the BC Lions’ Skills for Life Summit including students from the Okanagan.

Students were given the chance to learn first-hand about the skills needed for many of the jobs that will be in demand in the future.

"We're doing as much as we can to prepare young people for great careers in a growing economy," said Premier Christy Clark. "The students here today might just be starting to think about a career path - but the earlier they find their passion, the more likely they are to succeed."

Students had the opportunity to tour WorkBC’s “Find Your Fit” skills and trades stations at the Richmond Oval to learn about trades such as welding, carpentry, heavy equipment and more. Students also participated in leadership and team building workshops with the BC Lions players to discuss topics such as bullying, violence against women and making positive life choices.

"We're trying to give young people a clear and seamless path right from school through to the workplace, said Minister of Education Peter Fassbender. "The BC Lions share our commitment and they are a key partner in giving students the right kinds of opportunities."

Principals from around the province were asked to select two grades six to eight students per school district. The following local students attended this year’s summit: Riley Duncan-Marchand from Fulton Secondary in Vernon, Gavin Weremy and Jamar Angell from Constable Bruce Neil in West Kelowna, as well as Isaac Zyri and Dean Koller from Shuswap Middle School.
