Fort Mac Family Confirms Death of Second Child in Accidental Poisoning

News of the death of a second child has rocked a Fort McMurray family as they continue to grieve the loss of one of their children who died after inhaling a bed bug fumigant.

The funeral for their eight month old daughter was held on Thursday just as the family learned that their two year old had also passed because of an accidental poisoning.

Lawyer Allan Vinni released the following statement to KelownaNow.com on behalf of the family:

“On behalf of the Habib family, with regret we confirm the passing of their two year old child, Zia-Ul Hasan Syed today at the Stollery Children’s Hospital in Edmonton. The family thanks everyone for continuing to respect their privacy as they prepare to bury their child tomorrow. Burial of their youngest child took place today. Thanks to all who are supporting this family in this most difficult time.”

On February 22nd first responders were called to an apartment at 81 Fraser Avenue after an unknown substance spilled in one of the suites. Four children under the age of 10 were rushed to hospital in critical condition. Regional Emergency Services later identified the substance as phosphine; a poisonous substance used an insecticide.

As a result of the incident an eight month old baby died and the funeral for the girl was held in Edmonton at a local mosque.

A Go FundMe campaign has been launched for the family as they remain in hospital in Edmonton with their other children. In two days more than $22,000 has been donated to the cause and with news of the death of another it could be sometime before they are able to return home to Fort McMurray.
