Calgary Humane Society Undertakes Largest Seizure in Its History

The Calgary Humane Society has conducted its largest seizure in its history as a total of 1,123 animals have been taken from a single property.

On May 26th, 2015, the Human Society’s Protection and Investigations team, along with the Calgary Police Service, Animal Services, and Fire Department, seized the animals from a northeast property. In total, officers seized three dogs, three cats, 80 fish, and 1,037 domesticated mice. Many of the mice were in very poor health and a total of 275 animals had to be euthanized due to injuries.

“By volume, this is the largest animal seizure in Calgary history,” said Brad Nichols, Senior Manager, Cruelty Investigations. “It will take some time to sift through all of the veterinary evidence, but it is fair to say that charges are pending.”

During the course of the seizure, the property was deemed uninhabitable by health inspectors due to unsanitary conditions.
