Applicants no longer have to be Canadian citizens to apply for RCMP

The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) have made some changes to their recruitment system in an attempt to make the process more streamlined, flexible and diverse.

One of the biggest changes made is opening up who can apply to RCMP. The police force is now accepting applications from individuals with permanent resident status in Canada who have lived in the country for the past 10 years. This means even if an applicant isn’t a Canadian citizen, they can still apply.

Other changes have been made to the testing requirements. All applicants used to have to write the RCMP Entrance Exam, a general ability test designed to determine an applicant’s aptitude for police work. Under the modernized process, those applying with a minimum two-year college diploma from a recognized post-secondary institution will no longer be required to write the exam.

Instead of a physical test during the application process, the Physical Abilities Requirement Evaluation (PARE) will now only be assessed at the RCMP Training Academy in Regina.

The final change is in relation to interviews. Organizational competencies previously assessed in the Regular Member Selection Interview (RMSI) will now be assessed at other interview and evaluation steps in the process, as well as at training.

“A career with the RCMP offers the chance to have a meaningful impact on Canadian communities every day,” said Royal Canadian Mounted Police Commissioner, Bob Paulson.

“The changes to our recruitment process outlined today will allow us to continue building a diverse workforce so that we are better able to serve all Canadians.”

Paulson said the force is actively seeking new team members from a wide range of backgrounds. More information on the application process and joining RCMP can be found online at RCMPCareers.ca.
