GivingTuesday is growing more than Black Friday and Cyber Monday combined

A newer tradition that counteracts some of the greed shown around Black Friday and Cyber Monday is showing exponential growth.

GivingTuesday is a global day of giving that was brought to Canada by GIV3 and CanadaHelps in 2013. It’s gained traction every year and saw an astonishing 302% growth over the last year, compared to 65% growth for Cyber Monday sales and just 37% growth for Black Friday.

“While the total amount of money spent shopping on Black Friday and Cyber Monday still far exceeds the value of donations made on GivingTuesday, it’s very encouraging to see that Canadians are embracing the spirit of giving,” said Lys Hugessen, President of the GIV3 Foundation.

It’s not just a monetary movement though, as Canadians are encouraged to celebrate giving in whatever way is meaningful for them this holiday season. That includes volunteering, giving blood, holding clothing drives, helping at a local food bank, teaching the next generation about philanthropy or even just spreading the word on social media.

“With more than 5,300 partners and 30 civic groups working together, it’s incredible to see that participation for GivingTuesday is at it’s highest level ever,” says Marina Glogovac, President and CEO of CanadaHelps.

Glogovac added that each year 35% of annual charitable donations come in December alone. Combine that number with the fact that Canadians donate 585% more on GivingTuesday than an average day during the year and it becomes apparent that the giving spirit is alive and well around the holidays.
