The explosion took place Thursday morning and was caused by a leak in the hose of a propane truck in Cuajimalpa, on the outskirts of the city. The explosion leveled part of the hospital as mothers and babies frantically tried to escape. Mexico City Mayor Miguel Angel Mancera told reporters that the deceased included a mother and a child. Of those that are injured, around 60, 22 of them are in serious condition.

Rescuers are working to dig out any trapped survivors and the area is surrounded by police as a safety precaution for residents who may try to enter the hospital. The local government is asking the public to donate blood and diapers and people have been doing that just all day long.

The hospital is located next to a school in a middle class neighbourhood.
