Co-Pilot Deliberately Crashed Germanwings Plane, Killing 150 People

Germanwings flight 9525 that went down on Tuesday was intentionally crashed, according to a French prosecutor.

During a press conference on Thursday, Marseille prosecutor Brice Robin said that the co-pilot appeared to have wanted to “destroy the plane”. Robin says the information has come to light from the black box cockpit voice recorder that was recovered. Pounding could be heard on the door to the cockpit in the final minutes of the flight as the pilot was locked out. The co-pilot’s breathing was said to be normal throughout the final minutes and he has been identified as a German national, who has never been flagged as a terrorist.

Very little information has been released about the pilot, just his name, Andreas Lubitz, and that he was 28-years-old. The plane crash killed all 150 people on board including a group of exchange students, two babies and six inflight crew members. The investigation has now been turned over to German authorities.

Parent company, Lufthansa, has offered special flights to Marseille for the next of kin of passengers on flight 4U 9525. Searchers continue to look for bodies at the wreckage, but much of the plane and its contents have disintegrated.
