The explosion affected four building from 2nd Avenue to 7th Street, and preliminary evidence suggests that a gas-related explosion ignited the fierce fire throughout the east end block.
At this time, authorities know of 12 injured individuals. Three of which are in critical condition.

According to New York City Mayor, Bill de Blasio, the explosion occurred in building 121 on 2nd Avenue, causing it to partially collapse. As a result, building 123 collapsed as well.

The investigation is currently ongoing, yet initial impact appears to have been caused by plumbing and gas work inside building 121 on 2nd Avenue.
All available first responders are currently on scene and battling the blaze. Mayor de Blasio said the fire has now been contained to four buildings.
“I want to also commend the FDNY. This is a complex and difficult operation they’re mounting here, obviously doing everything they can to search for anyone who still may be in those buildings, but also to ensure that there’s no spread of fire to the surrounding buildings,” said Mayor de Blasio.
The NYC Health and Mental Hygiene are advising citizens to stay away from smoky areas and watch for air-quality advisories.
