Ripped-Up Sick Notes Found in Germanwings Co-Pilot’s Apartment

The German prosecutor’s office has released new information about the co-pilot of the crashed Germanwings flight, Andreas Lubitz.

The deceased co-pilot’s apartment has been searched, and senior public prosecutor Ralf Herrenbrück says that documents have been found showing Lubitz had an existing illness and appropriate medical treatment. In addition, searchers found torn-up sick notes, including one for the day of the crash. As a result, the prosecutor says that the findings “would—according to preliminary evaluation—support the assumption that the deceased had concealed his illness towards his employer and his occupational environment.” No information has been revealed on the nature of Lubitz’s illness.

Lubitz’s company, Germanwings, commented on the sick note as well, declaring that “a sick note for this day was not submitted to the company”.

The prosecutor says that no farewell letter or anything of the sort was found in the search. In addition, they have found no evidence of Lubitz having a political or religious motivation for crashing the plane.

As a result of the tragedy, Lufthansa and Germanwings announced Friday that they are adopting the “rule of two” for aircraft cockpits, in coordination with Germany’s aviation authority. This precautionary measure will mean that two authorized persons must be present in the cockpit at all times during the flight. Canada called for a similar safety protocol on Thursday in response.

A French prosecutor announced Thursday that Lubitz appeared to have intentionally crashed the plane, killing all 150 people on board.
