Original Story:

A police officer on scene at an Oregon Community College has confirmed that a gunman who opened fire on the campus is now dead.

During a press conference on Thursday afternoon, a spokesperson for local police confirmed that a 20-year-old male shooter has died.

Police and first responders received a 911 call at around 10:30 a.m. on Thursday. After arriving on scene, police found the shooter near one of the buildings on the Umpqua Community College campus.

There was an exchange of gunfire between officers and the shooter.

Police are now sweeping the college for additional threats; officers are referring to the incident as an active investigation.

Described as a rather peaceful community, Governor of Oregon Kate Brown said she is in a state of “profound dismay” following Thursday’s events.

At this time, responders are focusing on attending to the injured and securing the campus.

There are well over 100 officers and detectives on scene. No police officers were injured.

Police have confirmed that some people have died and some were injured.

Early reports suggest that at least 13 people are dead and as many as 20 are injured; however, police have yet to confirm these numbers.

The college is currently on lock down. The campus is located in a rural location about 180 kilometres south of Portland in Roseburg.
