Manteo Resort Says Reducing Their Dock was the "Right Thing to Do"

The KLO Neighbourhood Association (KLONA) says Manteo Resort will change the structure of their dock that is currently under construction.

A media release from Bob Whitehead, President, and Michael Neill, Vice President, says that concerns the KLONA raised recently have the new dock have been addressed. The statement is as follows:

“Upon investigation it became clear the new Manteo marina, as designed, met Federal Department of Transportation, Provincial Ministry of Environment and City of Kelowna requirements. Further, we discovered that the approval process took some seven years and allowed time for public input. Given those approvals and the current status of construction, we were generally discouraged about the possibility at this late date of having any changes made to address our concerns.

“Bob Whitehead and Michael Neill from the KLONA met with the Manteo ownership to discuss how the view corridor could be improved by removing part of the dock. Although the drawings of the proposed docks show them to be within the frontage of Manteo's waterfront, the curve of the bay shared by both Manteo and Rotary resulted in sight lines from Rotary Beach that made the docks appear to be in front of the south end of the beach. This did not become apparent until the pilings for the docks were set in place.”

The release goes on to say that Manteo Resort recognizes its responsibility within the neighbourhood and will modify the number of boat slips.

Adrian Block the Owner of Manteo Resort says, “it was a surprise to everybody including the designers of the dock, it appeared to be in front of the beach. We understand the implications and have been looking what our options are and have volunteered to make a modification of the dock.

"Nobody saw the implications and we are doing our best to improve the situation. We are simply reducing the size of the dock but it will still remain in that envelop of space. We lose about 30 slips and there’s a cost to that. We have to pull those pilings out. But that doesn’t matter we need to do this, we believe it’s the right to do.”

The final revisions will now to be reviewed provincially and federally and the resort will continue to work at removing those extra pilings. Manteo Resort hopes the dock will be fully constructed by the end of the summer.
