B.C. Budget Providing Funding for Kelowna SPCA Improvements

In light of Tuesday's budget review, our furry, four-legged friends will be shown a little love in the form of a $5 million grant to the BC SPCA's Facilities Development and Services Plan.

“This is great news for animals and animal lovers in B.C.,” said Craig Daniell, Chief Executive Officer of the BC SPCA. “The financial support from the provincial government will help to ensure that companion animals, farm animals and wildlife continue to receive the best possible care at our facilities.”

The Facilities Plan is an eight year strategy totalling $50.4 million to replace and renovate aging SPCA infrastructure in ten communities across the province. As the largest capital plan in the SPCA's 120 year history, Kelowna will be one of the ten communities to reap the rewards.

"It's really great news to see the provincial government step forward and provide support for the animals. At the Kelowna shelter we're very pleased with the commitment," said Suzanne Pugh, the Branch Manager for the Kelowna SPCA.

Pugh said that Kelowna SPCA is scheduled to develop a large animal facility with the provincial funding.

Upgrades to facilities will vary depending on the specific needs of the local community. Projects will include new community animal centres, facilities to house seized farm animals, storefront adoption centres, and facilities to promote increased community access to spay/neuter services.

Construction on provincial projects are expected to begin in 2015, pending approval from the BC SPCA Board of Directors. Other areas in B.C. to receive funding will be West Kootenay, Dawson Creek, Vancouver, Prince George, Surrey, and Kamloops.

The facilities scheduled for replacement are between 30 to 55 years of age and require improvements.
