Kelowna International Airport is Getting Bigger and Better

The Kelowna International Airport is looking to expand in order to accommodate a new fleet of airplanes.

In Monday's regular council meetings, Airport Director Sam Samaddar asked Kelowna Council for support in a mutual land exchange agreement of 508.8 square metres between the City and Regency Aero Lease Inc.

The new agreement will allow YLW to house either two Boeing 737 planes or six Q400 aircraft stands.

The airport's expansion project was developed and approved by Council during the 2015 budget review.

Aside from an expansion, terminal and landing fees will see an increase as of April. Kelowna International Airport has experienced rapid growth in the past year, however; as a result, increased costs for both building and ground maintenance, as well as a higher cost for labour, utilities, and technological upgrades are on the horizon.

Essentially, as of April 1st, 2015, landing fees and terminal fees will be bumped up one point five percent. Breaking that down, the current landing fees for a B373-700 aircraft stand at $398.64, by April 1st, 2015, the cost will go up to $404.58. In terms of terminal fees, the cost will increase by about $4.

“As with any business, growth also brings increased costs. These must all be balanced with a need to maintain our low cost airport model that ensures that the airport continues to be attractive to airlines and other business partners,” said Noreen Redman, the Airport Finance and Corporate Services Manager.

Redman said this fee will keep us on track in terms of attracting additional business and growth to YLW.
