Kelowna Residents Test Their Limits to Raise Funds for Families in Need

The Kelowna Family Y was bustling on Saturday, with residents challenging themselves to help families who need support.

The second annual Megathon was a big success, with Kelowna residents testing their limits to act as heroes to local children. Participants chose their own challenges to raise funds for the YMCA's Strong Kids campaign, which goes year round to help all children have access to programs like childcare, camp, and swim lessons.

“It's so that people in the community that are struggling a little financially—we all go through such times—can get that support and have access to programs to help build up their kids,” says Erica Hudson, Communications Coordinator.

The Kelowna Family Y says that one in five Okanagan kids need financial assistance to participate in the YMCA programs.

Challenges were running all day, with participants doing 10 km swims, a pickleball tournament, triathlons, walkathons, cycle-a-thons, and even a tread-water-and-float-a-thon. Others tested their strength in the Big Lift, danced their feet off at the Zumbathon, did yoga for two hours, or participated in a fast-paced Amazing Race event. Both the Kelowna Family Y and the H20 Adventure and Fitness Centre were busy with events all day.

The event also brought out some heartwarming stories of endurance. Hudson says that a couple signed up to do the triathlon together, giving mutual encouragement. “She struggles with running and he struggles with swimming, so they're both supporting each other through those different challenges,” said Hudson.

Another member had a double bypass surgery, and he dedicated himself to walking for five miles on Saturday. “He comes here and practices walking often, but five miles is pretty big, so we're all cheering him on,” said Hudson.

The Megathon is superhero-themed, recognizing the importance of everyday acts. “A hero is anyone who has the courage to step up and act when they are needed,” says the YMCA. “They have a strong belief in people and feel that everyone deserves a chance to be safe, healthy, and happy. They act for the well-being of others, even strangers.”

“They believe that small acts for others are great acts that will change the world, one person at a time.”

The Kelowna Family Y is hoping to raise $25,000, and they were at about $15,000 in the morning. If you're interested in donating to this excellent cause, check out their website. All of the money donated goes towards children and families in need.
