Canadian Food Inspection Agency Comments on Valoroso Foods Situation

A full inventory process is underway at specialty food market Valoroso Foods in light of allegations of food tampering.

But if labels were changed and best before dates scrubbed off, that doesn’t necessarily mean anyone was in the wrong. Last week allegations were made against the company, which sells Italian products at two storefronts and supplies grocery stores across the country. According to the Canadian Food Inspection Agency (CFIA), changing best before dates is not illegal.

“All food sold in Canada is subject to the Food and Drug Act and Regulations. Foods with a durable life greater than 90 days do not require a best before date,” said Tammy Jarbeau, Media Relations with CFIA. “Changing the best before date on food is not a violation of the Food and Drugs Act and Regulations. However, it is illegal to sell food that is known to be unsafe. It is the responsibility of food manufacturers, producers and retailers to ensure the food they produce and sell is safe.”

Jarbeau said that the CFIA conducted an inspection of Valoroso Foods previously, which included reviewing with the owners requirements pertaining to best before and expiration dates. Currently the CFIA is working with owner Joe Valoroso and monitoring the company to ensure compliance with health and safety legislation.

Since 2011, Interior Health has received four complaints against the company regarding concerns about labelling and best before dates. Those complaints were forwarded to the CFIA. To read the full response from Valoroso you can find the previous story here.
