Owners Say Goodbye to the Minstrel Café

A long-time favourite café and bar in Kelowna is changing hands as the owners of The Minstrel Café have sold their business.

According to Clare Anderson, co-owner, his business partner sold the café to new owners, ending the 15 year legacy.

“It all happened very quickly, and it wasn’t what I wanted personally,” he expressed with disappointment. “It’s been quite a ride, 15 years of dining, music and regal.”

The last night of business for Anderson was on Tuesday, and it was filled with memories, laughter and a few tears. The business opened its doors in 2000 and after the initial five year lease expired, Anderson was approached by someone he knew from Edmonton.

“We formed a new company, bought the land and building and renovated,” said Anderson. “Things went very well and then the principle partner who is in control had something happen and he divested his Canadian holdings and moved to Georgia. In the last three years he has looked at selling his last remaining asset here and it closed a few weeks ago. He was finally able to do it.”

A disappointed Anderson said he was making plans to put financing together but he never got the opportunity to do so and the business was sold. But he assures customers that the new owners want to continue the style as it has existed with, but with their own flair.

Anderson is sad to see his second home sold and will miss the customers, entertainers and nightlife that he has gotten so used to.

“The beauty about this business is it is unique in some ways as every night can be different,” he said reminiscing about the past 15 years. “You’re always dealing with people, food, wine and celebration and you add entertainment in the mix, and it can get very magical.”

Many entertainers have passed through the doors of The Minstrel Café, from world class stars to local talent, all in an intimate venue.

Anderson feels fortunate to have been able to provide musical entertainment, good food and fine drinks to Kelowna and visitors and says he will keep many dear memories with him as he moves on to his next adventure. From artists such as Buckwheat Zydeco to The Oysterband to Colin Hay, there has been no shortage of memories over the years.

For now, Anderson plans to spend some time with his children before getting back into the swing of things. As for The Minstrel Café, it will be open again for business on Thursday under its new ownership.
