Vancouver Addictions Researcher to Speak in Kelowna

A well-known addictions researcher will be in Kelowna to address the problem of addictions and mental health, which he says has reached a global epidemic.

Bruce K. Alexander, a professor emeritus at Simon Fraser University, is speaking at the event, which is a fundraiser for Ozanam House in Kelowna. The house is a 19-bed recovery and transition home for adult men who struggle with addictions and/or mental health issues.

According to Alexander, addictions have reached global proportions in our free-market society, as people are being torn from close ties to family, culture, and traditional spirituality.

The Vancouver researcher will speak about the social perspective of addiction, arguing that modern-day pressures towards individualism and competition dislocate people from social life, and addictions of all kinds provide a substitute.

The event will see all ticket proceeds directly benefit the Ozanam House. The event is scheduled to take place on Thursday, April 30th at 7:00 p.m. at Okanagan College. Tickets are $20 for general admission and $15 for students.

For more information on the event of Ozanam House visit their website or Facebook page.
