Kelowna Family Announces Creativity Award for Deserving Artists

A new creative studies award was inspired and funded by a local Kelowna family.

On April 25th at the BFA graduating exhibition gala for UBCO’s students majoring in visual arts, the Head of Creative Studies announced the new Creativity Award that was inspired and funded by the Blenk family, developers of Kelowna’s largest master-planned community.

“We are immensely grateful to Wilden and the Blenk family for this wonderful award,” said Ashok Mathur. “There are so few of these types of awards for our students, and this will be the largest.”

Wilden Director Karin Eger-Blenk handed out the $2,500 Wilden Creativity Award to Cale Shannon as well as two finalist awards to Connor Charlesworth and Cortnee Leeh Chulo.

“Visionary minds are needed in all areas of our future. The ability to create something new and original, shaping our ideas into reality, is immensely important,” said Eger-Blenk. “Before we create new communities in Wilden, we look at the land just like artists look at their raw material, and envision the kind of living that we want to create here. We never copy the concepts of others. This requires a strong imagination, knowledge, courage and the urge to promote change. This is why we want to help strengthen these virtues in the young generation.”

The artists were selected for the award by UBC Okanagan’s Department of Creative Studies. All three will exhibit their work from June 7th to July 5th, 2015 in the Wilden Presentation Centre.
