“Get Loud” and Reflect on Your Attitudes Towards Mental Health This Week

Monday kicks off Mental Health Week, and Canadian Mental Health Association (CMHA) Kelowna is helping people to talk openly and honestly about mental health.

For the awareness week from May 4-10, CMHA Kelowna is encouraging residents to reflect on their own attitudes about people who live with mental health issues. The organization says that reducing discrimination and stigma is key so that those living with those issues can be better supported in managing or recovering.

CMHA is asking Canadians again whether they’re “fine” or “phine”, the latter being when you claim you’re fine when you’re not. The organization is asking Canadians to “GET LOUD” because being “phine isn’t enough. Instead, be heard, raise awareness, reduce stigma, show support, and take action. .

Organizers are putting together information and material and hosting events across Canada. In Kelowna, CMHA is working on an interactive presentation at Mount Boucherie Secondary with Loyal Hair Therapy in order to promote students’ self-esteem. On Tuesday, CMHA will be doing a presentation to parents of Mount Boucherie students on Teen Resiliency and the Resilient Minds in Tough Times. Finally, they’ll be doing an event open to the general public on Thursday at the Rutland OBGC Centre, co-delivering Supporting Our Families: Celebrating the Adolescent Brain.

CMHA Kelowna is taking their events into the rest of the month, with presentations for Kelowna Family Y members and North Glenmore Elementary parents.

Check out everything that CMHA Kelowna is doing on their website, and make sure to check out their fact sheet.
